On big firm beginnings, branching paths, and what lies beyond.
For the NUS Faculty of Law students amongst us, the Centre for Future-ready Graduates@Law is organising a panel discussion at the Bukit Timah Campus this coming Wednesday (16 October 2024), on the topic "Big Four to Beyond: Navigating Your Legal Career".
I am very excited¹ to be participating in the panel discussion alongside Yanyi Kang 江妍仪, Juon Qiang Yin, Istyana Ibrahim, Aziah Hussin, and Ju Er Wong.
The thematic focus will be on the various pathways available for young lawyers who start out in big firms. This arose out of the observation that many law students:
a) apply for training contracts at large firms, almost by default;²
b) receive more than one training contract offer, have difficulty deciding which to accept, and err towards large firms;³ but
c) may not have considered what comes next after they start out at a large law firm.⁴
This is, of course, not to leave out the law students who intend to apply outside of the large firms, and I promise that there will be insights for such students. Heck, out of the 5 speakers, only one is still in a large firm.
Also, I believe there will be refreshments afterwards, which may well be a significant draw.
For those interested, do sign up - last I checked, the registration link [https://lnkd.in/geGpSC2B] still works.
See y'all there.

¹ Why? Well, in no particular order:
a) going back to BTC aways brings back fond memories of the 3 years⁵ I spent there as a law student. There, I met some of my closest friends, got to know my ex-girlfriend,⁶ and got up to enough hijinks to last a lifetime. Also, this is likely one of the last few opportunities to attend a law school event at BTC, what with the impending move back to the Kent Ridge campus;
b) my fellow panelists are interesting and inquisitive folks from diverse backgrounds; and
c) lawyers love the sound of their own voices, amirite?
² Guilty as charged.
³ Not guilty, because back in the day, I didn't receive multiple offers. Still, it was fairly automatic decision to accept the offer I received from a large firm.
⁴ Absolutely completely irredeemably guilty of this.
⁵ My batch spent our 1st year at the Kent Ridge campus, before shifting to BTC. So things have come full circle.
⁶ Now spouse.
